Step-by-Step Guide to ASTM C778 Sieve Analysis for Graded Sand – Lab Testing Procedures

Step-By-Step Sieve Analysis for Graded Sand

Procedure:

Step 1: Sample Preparation

  • Dry the sand in an oven (110 ±5 °C) if it’s damp.
  • Weigh exactly 500 grams of dry sand.

Step 2: Assemble Sieves

  • Stack the sieves in the following order (coarsest at top):

Top → No. 16 (1.18 mm)

       No. 30 (600 µm)

       No. 40 (425 µm)

       No. 50 (300 µm)

       No. 100 (150 µm)

Step 3: Sieve the Sample

  • Place the 500 g sand sample in the top sieve.
  • Sieve using a mechanical shaker for 10 minutes (or manually shake for 10–15 minutes).
  • Make sure to brush particles from sieve frames into the mesh and pan carefully after sieving.

Step 4: Weigh Retained Material

  • Remove and weigh the material retained on each sieve and the pan.
  • Record the weight for each.

Example Results:

Specification Check:

Conclusion: The sand in this example does not meet the graded sand requirements due to excess fine material (passing No. 50 and No. 100).
